It is very difficult, practically impossible for non-native English speakers, even Japanese English teachers to teach your children correct English phonemes as well as natural English intonation. WHY IS IT SO DIFFICULT? Because most Japanese adults, including Japanese English teachers, don't even know what the true sounds of English phonemes are. In fact, I have found that many adults don't even realize that romaji pronunciation is not English! How can they teach what they don't know? Romaji is completely different from real English pronunciation! NOTHING is the same. English has phonemes that don't even exist in Japanese! English has more vowel sounds. English has consonants that require the speaker to move their mouth in strange ways that isn't necessary in Japanese. Students need to learn to recognize and distinguish between English phonemes and they need to learn to blend the phonemes into words because it is completely differently from how Japanese phonemes blend into words. Unfortunately, during Japanese English classes and at juku, students are just listening to lectures about English grammar in Japanese and for the few minutes the teachers speak English it is usually romaji--not English.

This is bad! Using romaji instead of correct English phonemes is like trying to open a door by jamming the wrong key into a lock. I have taught English conversation to Japanese adults for a very long time so I am very familar with all the problems they have trying to understand to real English conversations because they never had the chance to learn English phonemes.

Even though adults know the meaning of the words and the grammar, they can't understand the conversation because they can't catch which vowels and consonants native speaker is using in the words. It is just COMMON SENSE for students to learn English phonemes and intonation and from native speakers. Your children don't have to master pronunciation perfectly but they need recognize and distinguish between the sounds in English words and phrases. This will make picking up English by just listening to conversations in English so much easier for them -- like how some musicians can listen to a song, recognize the notes without looking at the sheet music and be able to play the song. HOW CAN PARENTS HELP THEIR CHILDREN LEARN ENGLISH PHONEMES AND INTONATION? Not easy. It will take commitment and patience. But with the right teacher, using the right methods and resources, it's possible. Motherese training is the key to English pronunciation! MOTHERESE? WHAT'S THAT? In a previous post dated July 14 2022, I introduced the research of Doctor Kuhl of the University of Washington in the United States. Doctor Kuhl and her team found that the very special way mothers speak to their babies is essential for learning language, especially for learning the phonemes of a language. This special way of talking has been given the name Motherese. Mothers, and any one who takes care of babies, completely change the way they normally speak. With babies, they use a very cheery, often silly, high pitched voice and deliberately exaggerate and elongate the phonemes in words, especially the vowels. And mothers look right in their baby's face, very close, so the baby sees how the mouth moves to shape the sounds of the language. And mothers speak in very simple sentences. They tend to repeat and articulate every word very, very clearly! It doesn't matter what country or culture -- EVERYONE instinctively talks to babies using Motherese. Doctor Kuhl's research also found that motherese is not only essential for babies learning language, motherese is the way everyone, at any age, learns another language. For older kids and adult learners of a foreign language, the high pitched, silly voice used with babies isn't necessary. BUT, all the other aspects of motherese are necessary. 1. Learners, especially beginners, need a teacher who will exaggerate the phonemes in words and speak the sentences puttting a pause between words. 2. Learners need to see how the teacher moves their mouth to make the sound of each phoneme in the words. The vowels, especially need to be stretched. 3. Learners need the teacher to articulate very clearly, more than usual. This gives learners' brains the practice they need to process the English words and then the grammar. 4. Learners need the teacher to start with super simple, short sentences and then repeats the sentences several times to give the learners' brains enough time to process the words and the grammar. I realized long before hearing about Professor Kuhl's research -- my students did so much better if I spoke very slowly, exaggerated the phonemes in each word, repeated sentences several times and articulated clearly. I was using motherese before ever knowing there was such a thing called motherese by neuroscientists! So parents how can you help your children develop the ability to recognize and distinguish between the phonemes of English? Suggestions Very rich parents 1. Hire a full time native English speaking nanny to care for your children completely in English. 2. Don't want a nanny? Hire a native English speaking tutor who will use motherese and have the tutor spend about 4 to 5 hours a day interacting with your children in English as well as teach them school subjects in English. BUT...very few parents can afford native speaking English nannies and tutors. What should every one else do? 1. If you can give you kids a weekly English lesson, CHOOSE the right NATIVE English speaking teacher! VERY IMPORTANT! WHAT MAKES A TEACHER THE RIGHT TEACHER?

The right teacher is a native English speaker who understands that students are hearing English phonemes for the first time and they need lots of exposure to them and practice to get used to them. The right teacher uses motherese techniques; speaks slowly and clearly, exaggerates and stretching the sounds. The right teacher talks face to face with the students, making sure they see their mouth so students can learn how to make the sounds themselves. The right teacher repeats the phonemes and words and sentences as many times as it takes to get the English into your kids heads. The right teacher speaks in very simple, very easy sentence patterns repeatly.

This gives learners' brains the repetitive practice needed to make the neural connections for the new English phonemes and intonation patterns. The right teacher doesn't sing or dance or play games or do crafts during lessons. Waste of valuable time that should be used for practicing the correct sounds of English. The right teacher is more important than the English schoo when it comes to pronunciaton and intonation. And only native English speakers can teach the true sounds of English phonemes. AND ...REMEMBER! Even with a great teacher, if your children only have an English lesson once a week, don't expect a pronunciation miracle. YOU have to supplement that lesson with effective home practice several times a week. HELPING YOUR CHILDREN LEARN ENGLISH PRONUNCIATION AT HOME WITH YOUTUBE VIDEOS. 2 keys to using YouTube for your children's English. 1. Choose the right videos! Videos must actually develop your children's English skills, not just entertain them. 2. The more time spent interacting with good English educational videos -- the better. The YouTube videos that are best for English speaking skills are probably not the ones your children want to watch. Going back to Doctor Kuhl's research, for the areas of the brain involved in learning the sounds of a language to be activated and to develop neural connections, we need human interaction. That means manga characters speaking English in videos don't stimulate this part of the brain.

So, most videos made for kids don't help them learn English ---- unless they only watch English videos a crazy amount every day for many years.
