ゲームや工作をするで、子どもたちが
英会話力を身につけることができればと
思います！
しかし、残念ながら、この2つのアクティビティは、特に週に1、2回しか英語のレッスンがなく、家で練習しない子供たちにとっては、貴重なレッスン時間の無駄になってしまうことがほとんどなのです。
その理由とは
歌やダンスは英語のレッスンの無駄遣いであることを前回の記事で説明したように、同じ理由である。
ゲームや工作は、生徒の注意を発展から奪う 英語のスピーキングスキルを、英文法パターンを正しく使う練習を必要としない、まったく別のスキルに集中させるのです。
覚えておいてほしいのは、私たちの脳はマルチタスクができないことです。
だから、英語の授業でゲームをしたり工作をしたりするとき、子どもたちの脳は、ゲームに勝つにはどうしたらいいか、工作をするにはどうしたらいいか、一番考えやすい言語に切り替わる。その言語とは、彼らの母国語である日本語であり、英語ではありません。
ゲームや工作をするときに、先生が英語の単語やフレーズを使わせようとしても、子どもたちは（大人も）カタカナに変えてしまうだけで、本当の英語ではないのです。
ゲームや工作は、子どもにとってとても大切な活動です。ただ、基本的な英文法を学んでいる最中ではありません。
私の経験では、日本人と一緒にゲームをしたり工作をしたりしても、新しい日本語の単語や文法を学ぶことはありませんでした。ただ、彼らがやっていることを見て、それを真似ただけなのです。
ですから、ゲームや工作が英語のスピーキングの練習のために特別にデザインされたもの（良いものもいくつかあります！）でない限り、また、生徒がゲームや工作に勝つことではなく、英語の練習に集中できるようにゲームや工作を使う方法を教師が知らない限り、ゲームや工作はほとんど時間の無駄でしかありません（でも、とても楽しい）。
私が未熟な教師だった頃、英語のレッスンで、子どもから大人まで、たくさんのゲームや工作をしたことがあります。
子供たちがゲームや工作を楽しんでいるから、きっと英語を話せるようになるに違いないと、私も含めて誰もが思っていたのです。
しかし、私はすぐにゲームや工作はレッスンの貴重な時間を無駄にするものだと気づきました。
英語を話すことが目的であれば、レッスン中ずっとスピーキングの練習をするのが一番です！たとえそれが楽しくなかったとしても。
考えてみてください。
ゲームで遊んだり工作をしたりすることが子どもの技能習得に最適だというなら、なぜ日本の公立学校の先生はゲームや工作で国語や算数、英文法を教えないのでしょうか。
保護者の皆さん。あなたは、自分の子どもの日本語学校の先生が、歌ったり踊ったり、ゲームをしたり工作をしたりして、算数や国語を教えることを望みますか？
先生がゲームや工作をしたり、歌を歌ったりして算数や漢字を教えてくれる塾を選びますか？
忘れないでください！英語は、日本語や数学と同じように、技術です。英語を話せるようになるには
ゲームやクラフトについては、例外があります。
ゲームや工作は、すでにスピーキング力がある帰国子女や、週に10時間以上英語を学んでいる子供たち、そして以下のような状況下で有効です。
例外1.
ゲームやクラフトが英語のスピーキングトレーニングのためにデザインされたものである場合。
ゲームや工作をしながら、全員が英語で話す練習をしていることを、先生が確認する場合。
ゲームや工作の内容を完全に英語で話せるようになるまで、繰り返しゲームや工作をさせなければならない ＊ゲームや工作の内容を完全に英語で話せるようになるまで、繰り返しゲームや工作をさせなければならない ＊ゲームや工作の内容を完全に英語で話せるようになるまで、繰り返しゲームや工作をさせなければならない。
そうでなければ、ゲームや工作をする意味がないのです。
例外2.
親は子供と一緒に英語でたくさんゲームや工作をすることです！
親御さん！
週に1～2回、英語教室でゲームや工作をしたり、歌ったり踊ったりするだけで、魔法のように英語が話せるようになると宣伝している英語教室や商品の広告に騙されてはいけません。そんなの意味がないんです！
特に週に1、2回しか英語を習わないのであれば、レッスン中にできるだけ英語を話す練習をすることが必要なのは当然のことです。
お子さんに必要なのは、エンターテインメントではなく、トレーニングなのです！
歌やダンス、ゲームや工作は、子どもたちに英語を教える効果的な方法ではないと言っている私に、何百人もの英語の先生たちが討論を申し込むと思うんです！

Games and crafts steal students' attention away from developing
English speaking skills and focuses it on a completely different skill that doesn't require them to practice using English grammar patterns correctly.
Remember, our brains cannot multi-task. So, when children play a game or do crafts in English class, their brains switch to the language that makes it easiest for them think about how to win the game -- and how to make their craft project.
That language is their native language, Japanese -- not English.
Even if the teacher tries to get students to use English words and phrases when playing games or making crafts, children (and adults) just change the words and phrases into katakana --- not real English --- and they use the katakana words and phrases with no more comprehension than a parrot who can makes English like sounds to get a snack from its owner. Playing games and do crafts are very important activities for childern. They should play many games and do a lot of crafts-- just not when they are learning how to speak basic English grammar. In my own experience, I have enjoyed playing games and making crafts with Japanese people but never learned any new Japanese words or grammar while doing it.
I just watched what they were doing and copied them.
So, unless a game or a craft is especially designed for practicing English speaking skills (there are a few good ones!) and unless the teacher knows how to use games and crafts so the students stayed focused on practicing English instead of winning the game or making the craft, games and crafts are mostly waste of time -- BUT very fun. When I was an inexperienced teacher, I played many games and did many crafts with both children and adults in English lessons.
Everyone, including me, assumed that because the kids had fun playing games and doing crafts, they must be learning to speak English. But I soon realized games and crafts mostly wasted valuable lesson time.
If the goal of the English lesson is for the children to speak English, then it is best for children to spend the entire lesson practicing speaking skills! EVEN IF IT IS NOT FUN.
THINK ABOUT IT
If playing games and doing crafts are the best way for children to learn skills, then why don't Japanese public-school teachers use games and crafts to teach Japanese, math and English grammar?
Parents, do you want your children's Japanese teacher teaching math and Japanese by singing, dancing, playing games and making crafts?
Would you choose a juku where the teachers played games, did crafts and sang songs to teach math and kanji? Remember! English is a skill, just like Japanese and math.
To learn to speak English requires the same serious effort as learning math, Kanji, piano, sofrware programing etc.
Games and crafts, singing and dancing don't give children the speaking training they need to become English speakers. EXCEPTIONS TO WHAT I JUST SAID ABOUT GAMES AND CRAFTS.
Games and crafts are useful with returners who already have good speaking skills & with kids who learn English more than 10 hours a week & under the following circumstances. Exception 1.
＊ If the games and crafts are designed for English speaking training. ＊If the teacher makes sure that ALL the children are practicing speaking in English while playing games and doing crafts. ＊The teacher must have the students play the game and do the craft repeatedly until they can talk about the game and craft completely in English. Otherwise, there is no point to playing games or making crafts. Exception 2.
Parents should play lots of games & do lots of crafts in English with their kids! PARENTS! Don't be fooled by advertising for English lessons and products proclaiming that your children can just play games, do crafts, and sing and dance around their English class once or twice a week and magically become English speakers.
That doesn't make sense!
It is good sense that your children need to practice speaking English as much as possible during their lessons, especially if they are only learning English once or twice a week.
Your children need training, not entertaining!

I think hundreds of English teachers will be clamoring to debate me for saying singing, dancing, games and crafts are just not effective ways to teach children English!
